Running DOS Games in Windows
Games 1 Comment »I like games. Mostly, I like puzzle games, because they challenge my brain, not just my thumb, index finger and pinkie.
And yeah, there’s a hell of a lot of cool games out there made for Windows, or any OS, running off a website. But there’s also a hell of a lot of games out there that are… well, old. Meaning that they were created back in the days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and Bill Gates was allegedly about to say that “640K should be enough for everyone”.
You know… games made to run on the “original” Disk Operating System, also known as DOS.
Who doesn’t remember Duke Nukem, Doom, Crystal Caves, Mystic Towers, Monster Bash, Bolo Ball, Bubble Bobble and Grand Theft Auto? Version 1, all of ‘em, that is? The games that set the direction for all the games we see these days?
And they’re all available for download and actual purchase, still!
But there’s a cinch. (Isn’t there always?)
Try running them on Windows 2000, XP or Vista (or even 95, 98 or ME…)
SoundBlaster IRQ and DMA? Ad-Lib? EGA, Hercules?
Yeah, you young whippersnappers scratch your head, and get offa mah lawn! Us old-schoolers remember the days of 8–track and vinyl, Miami Vice and Cyndi Lauper… the days of “Argh! Mein Leben!” (Wolfenstein), “Oh no!” (Lemmings) and “Medic!” (Blake Stone).
