The problem with open source

Open Source Development Times

So I’ve pretty much given up on developing an ASP CMS, simply because ASP is severely lacking in certain options (Yes, I could use ASP.Net, but where do I find the time to study that crap?)

The most important reason for me to develop something like this was work - to generate something our Morale Committee and HR could use to issue communications - and our server uses IIS and MSSQL.

Screw it. I’m the administrator of the box, and I installed Apache and PHP… and thankfully, there’s an MSSQL port available for PHP. Saves me a lot of hassle.

But it looks like I still have to develop the CMS, myself, as the one CMS that looks promising has been waiting for a PHP/MSSQL port for over two years, with no solution in sight.

Shame.

Web Editors - What’s The Use?

So I was all ready to start playing with Microsoft’s Expression Web and Adobe’s DreamWeaver, first of all to see what the hype is about (and to see why regular everyday people put down 200 or 300 dollar for a frickin’ text editor), second to confirm my suspicions that neither of the two is fit for regular home users… and I came to a startling realization.

I am, truly, a nerd.

Instead of just starting to write stuff and fiddle with tables and images and crazy layouts, the first thing I did was wonder where the hell the DOCType was? And where the easy, one-click button to choose a DOCType was located…

… and finding it buried deep inside an obscure property page, and checking if it got inserted correctly.

I’ve strayed too far from what a beginning web developer is.

This five minute experience has taught me one thing, however.

Regular people should not be able to touch that stuff without a certificate that proves they know what the hell they’re doing, what with their “making there hoempaeges for teh interwebs”.

I could come to absolutely fucking love Expression Web, and replace my Web Developer Express with it, had I had the dough.

Oh. My. God. I think I just soiled myself (in the good way) by just glancing around it. It even supports frickin’ PHP!
